Court Officer Exam – Suffolk County

Duties:  Court Officers are responsible for maintaining order and providing security in court buildings and courtrooms.  Depending on the jurisdiction in which employed, the incumbent may have peace officer status.  The incumbent may coordinate the activities of other court security personnel.  Peace Officers are authorized to make arrests and may be authorized to carry firearms.  This is only a partial example of the duties performed  by these Court Officers .
Note: The eligible list for this title will be used to fill future vacancies for this title in non-county jurisdictions under the jurisdiction of the Suffolk County Department of Civil Service.  This eligible list will NOT be used to fill county or state court officer positions.

    What exactly does this mean?

    1. Hi Ashley,this Exam is not the same for New York State Court Officer. The Suffolk County Court Officer exam is used to fill local town or village courts that are not staffed by New York State Court Officers.The State Court Officer exam will come out in a year or two. You should get your results within six months or less.

  2. Hello, is 53,265 the highest salary? I thought Suffolk County Court Officers were trying to increase their salary contract. I am registered for this exam but was hoping there was a possibility of a higher max salary.

    1. Hi Kate, Salaries will increase with new contracts. I want to make sure that you understand this Exam is not the same for New York State Court Officer. State Court Officers make thousands more at top pay. The Suffolk County Court Officer exam is used to fill local town or village courts that are not staffed by New York State Court Officers.The State Court Officer exam will come out in a few years.

      1. Hi yes thanks. I took the last nys court officer exam and scored an 88 but chose NYC region because i live in queens. I found out after that they were only looking at 95 and over for nyc.
        I guess I will still take the exam

        1. Hi kate, I recommend that you consider taking the Court Assistant exam in the meantime. Also, you should consider accepting a job outside of New York city, then ask for transfer back to the City. It could take a year or more but at least you would have the job. They are many officers who live in NYC but work in Westchester County and vice versa. Did you try contacting the Human Resource Department, to see if you can change the locations where you are willing to accept a job?
