Agency:   City Of Yonkers

Duties: Responsible for fire fighting and prevention, salvage and rescue operations. Also performs routine custodial work at the station house and maintenance of equipment.

Starting Salary:  $64,274

Qualifications:

(1) Pass open competitive exam.
(2)Pass physical agility examination.
(3)Pass background check.
(4)Drivers’ License.
(5)Minimum age for appointment is 18 yrs old. Candidates must be at least 17 years and 6 months of age and not have reached their 29^th birthday on the date of the written test.  Up to six (6) years can be deducted from the maximum age requirement for period of military duty, as defined in Sect. 243 (1-b) of the New York State Military Law.
(6) (a) Graduation from high school or possession of a High School Equivalency Diploma, United States Armed Forces General Education Certification or a diploma, degree, certification or other academic credentials equal to a high school education that is accepted by the New York State Department of Education; or
(b)Completion of twenty-four credit hours of college level courses (including fire science courses), accredited by the New York State Department of Education, provided that the applicant obtains from the New York State Department of Education a high school equivalency diploma prior to appointment; or
(c)Two (2) years of satisfactory experience as a full-time paid firefighter or fire officer in a municipality other than Yonkers, or a comparable full-time paid position as a firefighter or fire officer in the United States Armed Forces, Coast Guard, or civilian employment with the United States Government, provided that the applicant has remained in good standing up to and including the date of termination; or
(d) An equivalent combination of training and experience as defined by the limits of (A) through (C).
(7) Candidates must be legal residents of Westchester County for at least three (3) months immediately preceding the date of the written examination and continuously up to and including the date of appointment.  PREFERENCE IN APPOINTMENT WILL BE GIVEN TO SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES WHO HAVE BEEN LEGAL RESIDENTS OF THE CITY OF YONKERS FOR AT LEAST THREE (3) MONTHS IMMEDIATELY PRECEDING THE DATE OF THE WRITTEN EXAMINATION AND CONTINUOUSLY UP TO AND INCLUDING THE DATE OF APPOINTMENT.
