MTA New York City Transit is accepting applications for Train Operator, Exam No. 7603. Train Operators have direct responsibility for the safe, timely, and proper operation of NYC Transit multi-unit subway cars, subway service cars, and trains — in revenue service, non-revenue service, and yard/terminal operations. This is one of the most in-demand transit roles in New York, offering strong hourly pay from day one with benefits including differentials, medical, and a pension.
Unlike the Conductor title, Train Operator requires a valid NYS driver’s license and one year of continuous full-time work experience — both must be met by the application deadline of July 28, 2026. No NYC residency is required.

Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a Train Operator and a Conductor?
A Train Operator drives the train and is responsible for its safe operation. A Conductor manages passenger safety — opening and closing doors, making announcements, patrolling platforms, and providing flagging protection. Train Operator starts at $41.16/hr; Conductor starts at $26.70/hr. Train Operator also requires a NYS driver’s license and one year of continuous work experience; Conductor requires only a high school diploma.
What is the starting salary for a Train Operator?
The current minimum starting rate is $41.16 per hour for a 40-hour work week (~$85,613/yr), rising to $42.00/hr (~$87,360/yr) in year two. Night and weekend differentials, paid holidays, vacation, sick leave, medical, and pension benefits are also included. All rates are subject to change per collective bargaining.
Do I need a driver’s license to apply?
Yes — a Motor Vehicle Driver License valid in the State of New York is required and must be held by the last day of the application period (July 28, 2026). Serious moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record may result in disqualification.
What work experience counts, and how is part-time credited?
You need one year of full-time satisfactory work experience continuous with one employer, met by July 28, 2026. Part-time experience (under 35 hours/week) is credited using the formula: (hours per week ÷ 35) × months worked. So 21 hrs/week for 12 months = 7.2 months full-time equivalent.
Do I need to live in New York City?
No. NYC residency is not required for this position at application or appointment.
What is the E&E Final Submit and why does it matter?
The Education and Experience (E&E) Exam is a separate section within MTA OASys where you detail your education, driver’s license, and work history. You must click Final Submit by midnight on July 28, 2026. Once submitted you cannot add or change information, and failing to submit at all means your entire application is treated as incomplete — no score, no exam invitation, and no refund.
Can I apply for both the Train Operator and Conductor exams?
Yes, you can apply for both. However, if you also apply for the promotional exam for Train Operator (Exam No. 7703), you may only sit the test once across both the open competitive and promotional versions. The promotional exam is only open to current NYC Transit employees in specific eligible titles.
What score do I need to pass, and how do I appeal?
A minimum score of 70% is required. If you believe your test was rated incorrectly, you can file an appeal through the Appeals tab in MTA OASys — your appeal must explain specifically why your score should be higher. Note that appeals may result in a higher or lower rating.
