NYC Open Competitive Exams for Anyone
Below is the list of competitive civil service exams available to anyone who meets the minimum qualification requirements. Click on Exam Title. for more information.
All exams listed below are applied for through the DCAS Online Application System (OASys). Walk-ins also accepted at all five CTACs, Mon–Fri, 9 AM–5 PM (closed July 14, 2026).

These exams are open exclusively to permanent (not provisional) competitive employees of agencies under the jurisdiction of the Commissioner, DCAS, and employees appointed under Civil Service Law §55-a. Check the individual Notice of Examination for exact eligibility and service requirements.

Each exam listed above is marked with a test type code. Here’s what each one means:
- ✓Online (preferred): Apply through OASys at nyc.gov/examsforjobs. A valid email address is required. New accounts must be verified before you can apply.
- ✓In person: Walk into any of the five CTACs listed below, Monday through Friday, 9 AM–5 PM. Bring a valid photo ID. CTACs are closed July 14, 2026.
- ✓Payment: Major credit cards, bank cards, and prepaid debit cards accepted online. Card payments incur a non-refundable 2% service fee.
- !Fee waivers: Veterans, unemployed individuals, public assistance/SSI recipients, and — new as of July 1, 2026 under Local Law 57 of 2025 — first-time applicants and NYC high school students. See Fee Waiver FAQs on OASys for documentation requirements.
- !Fees are non-refundable. Verify you meet the minimum qualifications for an exam before you pay. If you’re found “Not Qualified,” your fee will not be returned.
All five CTACs are open Monday through Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM, excluding holidays. Walk-ins welcome. Closed July 14, 2026.
