Frequently Asked Questions
What makes the Bridge Exam different from a regular civil service exam?
With the NYC Bridge Exam, you submit one application and pay one fee, but you can be considered for up to seven different job titles at once. On test day you choose which titles to compete for. If you qualify and pass, your name can appear on multiple eligible lists simultaneously — significantly expanding your hiring opportunities from a single exam.
When is the filing deadline and the written test?
The application period runs June 3 – June 23, 2026. The Education & Experience Exam must be Final Submitted in OASys by midnight on June 23, 2026. The computer-based written test is expected to begin on September 21, 2026.
Can I apply for both DCAS titles and NYC H+H titles in one application?
Yes — one application covers all seven titles. However, be aware that NYC Health + Hospitals is a separate municipal employer. If you are currently a City agency employee and accept an H+H appointment, your appointment date — for salary, seniority, and leave accruals — resets to your H+H start date.
What is the minimum education required?
It varies by title. Child Protective Specialist requires a baccalaureate degree from an accredited college. All other titles require a four-year high school diploma or its state-approved equivalent. The education requirement must be met by June 23, 2027 (per Civil Service Law §54(2)).
What happens if I am found “Not Qualified”?
If you are found Not Qualified on the Education & Experience Exam for a particular title, you will not receive a score for that title and your application fee will not be refunded. This is why it is critical to carefully review the qualification requirements for each title before applying.
Is there an application fee, and can it be waived?
The application fee is $47.00. Credit, debit, or gift card payments incur an additional non-refundable 2% service fee. Fee waivers are available for veterans, unemployed individuals, and those receiving public assistance or Supplementary Security Income (SSI). See the Fee Waiver FAQs on OASys before applying.
What is Selective Certification and should I apply for it?
Selective Certification is a process that gives certain candidates preferred consideration for positions requiring specific skills, licenses, or experience (e.g., bilingual ability, advanced computer skills, NYC Financial Management System experience, HVAC certification). Follow the instructions given on test day to indicate your interest. If you qualify later, you can submit a Selective Certification request through nyc.gov/CivilServiceNowNYC.
How long will the eligible lists remain active?
Eligible lists for City agency titles (DCAS-jurisdiction) remain active for four years. Lists for NYC Health + Hospitals titles are terminated one year from establishment unless NYC H+H extends them.
