The NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is accepting applications for Bridge Exam No. 6977 — an innovative civil service exam format that lets you apply once and be considered for up to seven different job titles simultaneously. On test day, you choose which titles you want to be considered for. If you meet the qualification requirements and pass the multiple-choice test, your name can appear on multiple eligible lists at once.
This exam is open to all candidates who meet the requirements for at least one of the titles listed below. Titles marked H+H are for NYC Health + Hospitals only — employees of City agencies who accept H+H positions receive a new appointment date for salary and seniority purposes.

You are responsible for determining whether you meet the requirements for each title you select before submitting your application. If found “Not Qualified,” your application fee will not be refunded. Experience must be met by June 23, 2026; education must be met by June 23, 2027.
- ✓Education: Baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university (regional, national, professional, or specialized accreditation recognized by U.S. Secretary of Education and CHEA). Foreign education must be evaluated for U.S. equivalency if used for credit.
- ✓English Proficiency: Candidates must pass a test to demonstrate English language proficiency.
- !Additional requirements: Drug screening, NYS Statewide Central Register background check, physical examination, and an 18-month probationary period including a Training Academy test. Special working conditions: nights, weekends, holidays, and unexpected overtime. Travel throughout the five boroughs required.
- ✓Education: Four-year high school diploma or state-approved equivalent.
- ✓Experience: One year of full-time satisfactory clerical experience.
- !Typing test: Must demonstrate ability to type accurately at a minimum of 100 keystrokes (20 words) per minute after errors are deducted. A separate computerized typing performance test is required — details provided at a later date.
- ✓Education: Four-year high school diploma or state-approved equivalent.
- ✓Experience: Six months of full-time satisfactory clerical experience and/or public-facing experience (e.g., processing sales, customer service, obtaining/dispensing information, resolving complaints).
- !Typing test: 100 keystrokes (20 WPM) minimum after errors deducted. Computerized typing test required. A medical examination is required prior to appointment.
- ✓Option A: Three years of full-time satisfactory experience as a mechanic, journeyperson, or helper in the electrical, mechanical, or construction/building maintenance trades.
- +Option B: At least two years of experience as described in Option A, plus sufficient full-time training or education in a trade school, technical school, or vocational high school to total the equivalent of three years. Six months of credit granted per year of acceptable training.
- !Note: Janitorial-type maintenance does not qualify. A valid NYS motor vehicle driver’s license is required at appointment and must be maintained throughout employment.
- ✓Education: Four-year high school diploma or state-approved equivalent. No additional experience required beyond the diploma for Secretary and Secretary (H+H).
- !Typing test: Must type accurately at a minimum of 35 words per minute after errors are deducted. A separate computerized typing performance test is required.
- !Secretary (Pro) — Promotion only: Must hold a permanent (not provisional) competitive appointment as Clerical Aide with at least two years of service and a completed probationary period. Provisional time served after September 4, 2024 counts toward the two-year requirement if a permanent appointment immediately followed.
- !Secretary (H+H): Appointments made at Level IIa. Medical examination required prior to appointment.
Every candidate sits both parts on the same day. Rank on the eligible list is determined by your multiple-choice score, plus veterans’ credits where applicable. You must Final Submit your Education & Experience Exam in OASys by midnight on June 23, 2026 — no changes can be made after Final Submit, and failure to Final Submit results in an incomplete application with no refund.
Titles with additional tests: Clerical Associate, Clerical Associate (H+H), Secretary, Secretary (H+H), and Secretary (Pro) also require a separate computerized typing performance test. Child Protective Specialist requires drug screening, a physical examination, and background checks. Details will be provided at a later date.
All applications must be submitted online only through the Online Application System (OASys) at nyc.gov/examsforjobs. A valid email address is required. You can also apply in person at any DCAS Computer-based Testing & Application Center (Mon–Fri, 9am–5pm). Centers are closed June 19, 2026.

The $47 application fee may be waived for candidates who qualify under any of the following categories:
A separate civil service eligible list will be established for each title. Candidates who meet the education and experience requirements for a title and pass the multiple-choice test will be placed on the eligible list for that title in final score order. You will receive a list number and email notification of results.
- ✓City title lists remain active for four years from the date of establishment.
- ✓NYC H+H title lists are terminated one year from establishment unless extended by NYC Health + Hospitals.
- !Residency: You may be required to be a NYC resident within 90 days of appointment, depending on the title and agency. Confirm with the appointing agency’s personnel office. This requirement does not apply to NYC H+H titles.
Make-up tests may be available for: military duty; compulsory court or public body attendance; on-the-job injury or illness (City employees); death of a spouse, domestic partner, parent, parent-in-law, sibling, or child within one week of the test (City employees); DCAS error; temporary disability; or pregnancy, childbirth, or a related medical condition.
