Who Can Apply — Four Qualification Pathways

You must meet one of the following four pathways by the time of appointment — not necessarily when you apply for or take the exam. You can take the test at age 17 and meet the qualifications before you are called for appointment.

1
College Credits
At least 39 semester credits at an accredited college or university. Note: Successfully completing the DOC Academy provides an additional 21 credits (for a total of 60). This is the most straightforward path for those with some college.
2
High School Diploma + Experience
A four-year high school diploma (or equivalent) plus at least 6 months in one of:
  • Honorable full-time U.S. military service
  • Social services, casework, mental health counseling, or services to the homeless
  • Law enforcement — Police Officer, Peace Officer, Special Patrolman, or federal/out-of-state equivalent
3
High School Diploma + General Work Experience
A four-year high school diploma (or equivalent) plus at least 1 year of satisfactory full-time paid general work experience. This is the broadest pathway — virtually any full-time paid job for one year qualifies, making this option accessible to most applicants.
4
Military Reserve Service
Two years of active service in the Army Reserve, Army National Guard, Navy Reserve, Air Force Reserve, Air National Guard, Marine Corps Reserve, or Coast Guard Reserve with an honorable discharge. Time in the Individual Ready Reserve (IRR) does not count.
ℹ️ Most applicants qualify through Pathway 3 (high school diploma + 1 year of any paid work experience). If you graduated high school and have held any full-time job for at least a year, you likely qualify. You do not need to verify qualifications to sit the written exam — just meet the age requirement (17). Qualifications are verified at the investigation/appointment stage.
Age, Driver License & Other Requirements
  • ✓Age to test: Must be at least 17 years old by the date of the multiple-choice test (December 15, 2026).
  • ✓Age to appoint: Must have reached your 21st birthday by the time of appointment. Candidates too young when the eligible list expires have no further opportunity for appointment.
  • ✓Driver license: Must possess a NYS learner’s permit at the time of appointment. Must obtain a valid NYS driver license before graduating from the DOC Academy. Must maintain a NYS driver license for the duration of employment.
  • !Existing license holders: May be disqualified for moving violations, license suspensions, or an accident record. Disclose your driving history accurately during the investigation.
  • ✓Citizenship: US citizenship required at the time of appointment.
  • ✓Residency: At appointment, must be a resident of NYC or Nassau, Westchester, Suffolk, Orange, Rockland, or Putnam counties.
  • ✓English: Must be able to understand and be understood in English.
Character, Background & Investigation
  • !Good character required. Disqualifying factors include: arrest record or conviction indicating lack of good moral character or disposition toward violence; repeated arrests showing disrespect for the law; discharge from employment indicating inability to adjust to discipline; dishonorable military discharge; and conviction of petit larceny.
  • ✗Absolute bars: Persons convicted of a felony or a domestic violence misdemeanor are not eligible for appointment.
  • !PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act): DOC will not hire anyone who has engaged in sexual abuse in any correctional or institutional setting, or who has been convicted or adjudicated of coercive sexual activity.
  • ✓Investigation fee: A $75 fingerprint screening fee is required at the time of investigation (not at the application stage). You must also present originals or certified copies of all required documents — high school diploma, birth certificate, naturalization papers if applicable, and proof of military service if used as a qualification.
  • ✓Peace Officer status: Must satisfy and maintain NYS Peace Officer requirements for the duration of employment.
  • ✓Firearms: Must qualify and remain annually qualified for firearms usage as a condition of employment.
Medical, Physical & Drug Testing
  • ✓Medical & psychological examination required before appointment; periodic re-examinations may be required throughout your career.
  • ✓Physical fitness test required before appointment; may be subject to periodic physical testing throughout career.
  • !Drug screening: Required before appointment. Random drug testing during Academy training (probationary period). Random testing may continue after probation or as a prerequisite for assignment or promotion.
  • ✗Zero tolerance drug policy: Any DOC employee found in possession of or using illegal drugs, or who fails, refuses, or attempts to evade a drug test, will be terminated. Applicants should conform behavior to this policy well before beginning the application process.
Probationary Period & Training
24-month probationary period. As a probationary Correction Officer, you must successfully complete a prescribed training course at the DOC Academy. Failure to complete Academy training results in termination. During the probationary period you are subject to random drug testing. The probationary period begins from the date of appointment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is the application really free?
Yes — the application fee for Correction Officer Exam No. 7302 is $0.00. When you reach the payment step on OASys, select “No Fee” as your payment method. Do not enter credit card information. This is one of the few NYC civil service exams with no filing fee.
I’m 17 — can I apply?
Yes. You must be at least 17 years old by the date of the written test (December 15, 2026) to apply. However, you must be 21 years old at the time of appointment. The eligible list typically remains active for one to four years after the exam, so a 17-year-old who scores well can be appointed once they turn 21. If you’re too young for appointment when the eligible list expires, there is no further opportunity from this list.
I don’t have a college degree — do I qualify?
Yes, for most applicants. If you have a high school diploma (or GED) and have worked any full-time paid job for at least one year, you qualify under Pathway 3. You don’t need to have worked in a specific field. If you have a high school diploma and served in the military for at least 6 months, worked in social services/mental health/homeless services for 6 months, or have 6 months of law enforcement experience, you qualify under Pathway 2. And if you completed 2 years of active Reserve service, you qualify under Pathway 4.
What is the salary and how fast does it grow?
Starting salary is $56,838/yr with automatic annual increments reaching $109,352/yr at the completion of 5.5 years. On top of that, longevity pay adds $4,799/yr at year 5, $5,799/yr at year 10, $6,799/yr at year 15, and $9,314/yr at year 20 — all on top of base salary. You also receive a $1,100/yr uniform allowance, City-paid health insurance, and contributions to Welfare and Annuity Funds. All rates are subject to change.
Where do Correction Officers work?
Correction Officers work at New York City correctional facilities — primarily on Rikers Island and other DOC-operated facilities throughout the five boroughs. You may be required to work nights, weekends, and holidays on rotating shifts. Some assignments involve escorting inmates to courts, hospitals, or other facilities outside of the correctional complex.
I have a criminal record — can I still apply?
It depends on the nature of the record. You are absolutely barred from appointment if you have a felony conviction or a domestic violence misdemeanor conviction — those are disqualifying by law. Other arrests, convictions, or pending charges are evaluated on a case-by-case basis during the background investigation. Disqualifying factors include convictions suggesting violence or disorder, repeated arrests indicating disrespect for the law, and dishonorable military discharge. You should apply and let the investigation process determine eligibility — but be honest and disclose everything, as misrepresentation is itself cause for disqualification.
What does “Peace Officer status” mean for this job?
NYC Correction Officers hold Peace Officer designation under NYS law. This gives them certain legal powers (including authority to make arrests) and also requires them to meet NYS training and certification requirements for Peace Officers. This status must be obtained and maintained throughout employment. Officers also must qualify and re-qualify annually for firearms — carrying a firearm is a condition of employment, not optional.
Can I be promoted from Correction Officer?
Yes. The promotional path runs from Correction Officer → Captain (Correction) → Warden (Correction) at several assignment levels. Promotional exams are announced separately through DCAS. Career advancement is based on performance, seniority, and competitive exam scores.
