The City of Yonkers is accepting applications for the Firefighter Examination 2026–2027. This is a competitive civil service examination conducted in accordance with Federal Court Consent Decrees entered with the Vulcan Society, Westchester County (78 Civ. 911) and the U.S. Justice Department (80 Civ. 03336). The examination process includes a written test, a physical agility test, and a medical examination — written and physical scores count equally toward your final total score.

Important: Unlike most civil service exams, the Yonkers Firefighter application cannot be submitted online or by mail. It must be hand-delivered in person to the Firefighter Recruitment Office with your $50 fee by check or money order. Plan ahead and do not wait until the November 25 deadline.

Medical Examination
Required for all qualified candidates. Date to be determined. Must be passed to be eligible for appointment from the eligible list.
ℹ️ Written and physical exams count equally. Your final score is determined by equal weighting of the written and physical agility tests. This differs from many civil service exams where the written test is the primary scoring component. Prepare for both thoroughly — strong written performance alone is not enough.

  • 2Complete your application. If you qualify for a fee waiver, also download and complete the Civil Service Application Fee and Waiver Form.
  • 3Prepare your payment. Write a check or money order for $50.00 payable to the City of Yonkers. No cash accepted. No credit or debit cards.
  • 4Hand-deliver your completed application and payment to the Firefighter Recruitment Office at the Riverfront Library, One Larkin Center, Room 101, Yonkers, NY 10701. Office hours: Monday–Friday, 8:00 AM–8:00 PM.

⚠ Hand delivery is the only accepted method. This is not a DCAS OASys exam — there is no online application system. You must physically bring your completed application packet and $50 check or money order to the Recruitment Office at the Riverfront Library before the November 25 deadline. The office is open Monday through Friday, 8 AM to 8 PM — making it easy to stop in before or after work.

Can I submit my application online or by mail?
No. The Yonkers Firefighter exam application must be hand-delivered in person to the Firefighter Recruitment Office at the Riverfront Library, One Larkin Center, Room 101, Yonkers, NY 10701. No online submission, no mail. The office is open Monday–Friday, 8 AM–8 PM.
What payment is accepted for the application fee?
Only checks or money orders are accepted — payable to the City of Yonkers. No cash, no credit cards, no debit cards. The $50 fee is non-refundable. If you believe you qualify for a fee waiver, download the Civil Service Application Fee and Waiver Form and submit it with your application.
When and where is the written exam?

How is the final score calculated?
The written examination and the physical agility test count equally toward a candidate’s total score. This means your physical performance is just as important as your written score for determining your rank on the eligible list. A medical examination is also required for qualified candidates but does not factor into the numeric scoring.
