ℹ️ Bus Maintainer Group A (Exam 7608) is the only open competitive exam on this cycle — open to any candidate meeting minimum qualifications, not just current MTA employees. Promotional Exams — Current NYCT Employees Only
These five exams are open exclusively to current NYC Transit employees who hold a qualifying title in permanent status. Promotional list appointments are made before open competitive lists when filling vacancies. All close October 28, 2026.

Section 2 — Bus Operator Openings (Rolling — Until Filled)
MTA has three separate Bus Operator positions open across its bus agencies — each with different agency structures, service areas, and labor agreements. All require a CDL license or permit. NYT — New York City Transit Authority
NYC Transit buses serve Lower Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Staten Island. This is a civil service title — you receive union representation and benefits, and the position follows NYC DCAS rules. However, this is a provisional appointment: to gain permanent status, you must apply for the civil service exam, pass the competitive multiple-choice test, and be appointed from the resulting eligible list. CDL license or permit required.
MAB — Manhattan and Bronx Surface Transit Operating Authority (MaBSTOA)
MaBSTOA operates from seven depots providing bus service throughout Upper Manhattan and the Bronx. Benefits and union representation included — but this is not a civil service title and MaBSTOA exams do not follow NYC DCAS rules. No civil service eligible list applies here. CDL license or permit required.
MTA Bus Company operates 44 local routes in the Bronx, Brooklyn, and Queens; 43 express bus routes between Manhattan, the Bronx, and Brooklyn; and 3 Select Bus Service routes in Queens. Benefits and union representation included — but this is not a civil service title and MTA Bus Company exams do not follow NYC DCAS rules. CDL license or permit required.
ℹ️ Civil Service vs. Non-Civil Service Bus Operator — what’s the difference?
The NYC Transit (NYCT) Bus Operator is a civil service title — it follows DCAS rules, meaning provisional employees must eventually take and pass a competitive exam to gain permanent status and protection. The MaBSTOA and MTA Bus Company positions are non-civil service — they offer the same union benefits and pay but are not governed by the civil service system, so no separate exam process for permanent status applies. All three agencies pay under union contracts, but the long-term job security framework differs.

✓ Provisional positions — what that means. Most of the skilled trades vacancies above are listed as “Provisional.” A provisional appointment lets MTA fill positions quickly without waiting for a civil service exam cycle. Provisional employees work in the full-time role with benefits, but when a civil service exam for that title is announced, they will need to take and pass it to gain permanent competitive status. If a higher-ranking candidate from the eligible list is available, they may replace a provisional employee.
